The ACES-Margarita Salas Awards, established in 2021, are promoted by the Association of Spanish Scientists in Sweden (ACES) with the aim of recognizing the scientific work carried out by researchers of Spanish nationality who have made a recognized international impact, contributing extraordinarily and exemplarily to social progress and well-being. They are supported by the Embassy of Spain in Sweden and the Ramón Areces Foundation, as well as under the patronage of Lucía Viñuela Salas, daughter of Margarita Salas. The awardee in this first edition, dedicated to the fields of Physics, Mathematics, and Engineering, has been Professor Mercedes Maroto-Valer (Vitoria, 1971), a prestigious expert in energy systems and decarbonization, and director of the British Research Centre for Carbon Solutions. The award ceremony took place during the visit of Their Majesties the Kings to Stockholm, attended by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares; the Secretary General of Innovation, Teresa Riesgo; the Spanish Ambassador to Sweden, Cristina Latorre; and the organizers, the Association of Spanish Scientists in Sweden (ACES).
During this meeting, ACES took the opportunity to highlight the need for a long-term state pact for science, endorsed by all political parties and representatives from the public and private sectors, which places science and innovation at the center of the transformation of our country’s productive model.
Science and innovation have been a fundamental component of the State visit of Their Majesties the Kings to Sweden, a country that is a leader in public and private investment in R&D+i and in the development and commercialization of advanced technologies.
